Cellphones and Youth in Serbia

More than seven billion people on the planet have a mobile phone. According to the UN, we can say that only 4.5 billion people own bathroom. In addition, more people own a phone than access to tap water. From these facts, we see what mobile phones present to the world. We were interested in how young people use mobile phones, whether they are used during the school day, how long you stay on the Internet and is the Internet that is used for scientific purposes or entertainment. We surveyed 232 students in three schools. An average age of students was 13 to 18 years.

From interviews with teachers and school principals, we learned that teachers and professors have a big problem with students because of the mass use of mobile phones during the school day. Photographing, texting, playing games, visiting social network and many other things are becoming more and more popular.

If a teacher caught a student with a mobile phone, he could take it away and return it at the end of the lecture. In some schools, there are the Rules on Disciplinary and Material Responsibility where is strictly defined that using cellphones is against the rules and that it should be punished… If a student uses the phone during the test, it will be initiated against his disciplinary proceedings, the penalty can be very serious because this act is considered as a serious crime. The student’s phone will be confiscated and the parent must come to pick the phone.

About the harmful effects of mobile phones and several hours sitting next to the computer, we talked with a psychologist at the Counseling Center for Youth and we found out a lot of useful information.

This all creates a new kind of addiction. Due to a fact that everything is reachable to your children create a new type of addiction. The problem is that everything is very close and reachable to our children.

Nowadays, we have a dependence on the Internet and not only related to computers, but for mobile phones too. If, in some case, children are not in front of the computer, they are holding their mobile phones in their hands. As consequences, we get another type of children’s brain, we concluded that all these forms of new technology speed up the brain, which is why today’s children do not like so much to read. Their brains are in front of the computer full of energy and when you sit in front of the book, the book makes you passive and slow.

How social networks influence the communication between young people?

“Communication of young people is reduced to SMS communication, which means that the verbalization of their situation is very poor. On the other hand, they communicate more than they used to. All of them communicate through new technologies almost all the time. They are in touch all the time via Viber , Facebook and other types of social networks. Basically, they are much related to friends via Facebook than with real friends in the real world.”
